Food & Water Action Fund engages with elected officials and in elections themselves to ensure that our decision makers take action against threats to safe food and clean drinking water.
Fracking
Fracking pollutes the water we drink and the air we breathe, and it’s dangerous for our health and our climate. It has also been linked to earthquakes. It is unacceptable that the oil and gas industry profits at the expense of our drinking water, environment and safety.
Climate Change & Environment
Climate change poses the largest environmental threat ever known by humankind. But policymakers are afraid to take the action necessary to stop global warming, even as corporations find new ways to shift all risks to taxpayers and pocket enormous profits.
GMOs
Genetically engineering our food supply carries risks to farmers, the environment, and people living near the fields that are heavily sprayed with the herbicide RoundUp, which the World Health Organization has said is a probable human carcinogen. Furthermore, the government approves GMOs for the food supply based on data submitted by the companies that want to sell them.
GMOs should be labeled so we have a voice in what we eat.
Factory Farms
Factory farms pollute the environment and our drinking water, wreck rural communities, and harm the welfare of animals—while increasing corporate control over our food.
In order to keep the animals under these stressful and unhealthy living conditions, factory farms rely on routine doses of antibiotics, which are contributing to the rise in antibiotic resistant bacteria that can make people sick.
Factory farms are not compatible with a safe and wholesome food supply – it’s time to get rid of factory farms.
Bad Trade Deals
So-called “free trade deals” like the Trans-Pacific Partnership are corporate giveaways in disguise. Instead of growing our whole economy, they benefit primarily powerful companies — but put everyone else at risk. The TPP and other trade deals:
- Expose consumers to more and riskier imported foods;
- Undermine communities’ rights to protect themselves from fracking;
- Attack hard-won safeguards for the environment;
- Encourage foreign corporations to privatize public services like water utilities; and
- Offshore more jobs, threatening the economic security of working families and worsening the growing economic inequality in America.
Corporate profits should not take priority over democratically enacted laws, and any trade deal that harms communities, workers and the environment is a bad deal. We must reject harmful trade deals like the TPP.
