Less than one week before the election, divides on key environmental issues revealed among candidates
Miami, FL — Today, Food & Water Action released a questionnaire revealing that the candidates running for Senate District 40 oppose fracking in South Florida, but disagree on whether to allow offshore drilling in the Gulf and the Atlantic. The primary election is Tuesday.
While three out of the six candidates, Ana Rivas Logan, Annette Taddeo, and Christian Schlaerth responded in support of a moratorium on offshore drilling and a statewide ban on fracking, Lorenzo Palomares opposed a moratorium on offshore drilling off the coast of Florida. He also opposed a statewide ban on fracking saying he’d only support a ban in the Everglades.
The two other Republican candidates for the seat, Jose Felix Diaz and Alex Díaz de la Portilla have not disclosed their position on the issue.
Last session, a state bill to ban fracking was introduced by two Republican legislators and half of the state Senate sponsored the bill. To date, 90 counties and cities have passed ordinances and resolutions in opposition to fracking in the state, including Miami Dade. However, neighboring counties like Collier County could still allow fracking, which would endanger local water systems and the surrounding environment. A fracking ban bill is expected to be introduced again in 2018 session.
Meanwhile, the Trump administration is also aggressively pushing a plan to lease offshore drilling areas in the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf. The plan has been opposed by many of Florida officials. A comment period is open for 45 days, ending on August 17th.
Food & Water Action believes that drilling in Florida and off Florida's coast is too risky. The BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill was a major wake up call to the risks posed by offshore oil drilling and the potential for fracking disasters. Florida’s elected officials must protect the environment, communities, and economy by banning both practices.
