RICHMOND, VA – Today, the environmental advocacy organization Food & Water Action Fund, the political advocacy organization supporting the educational work of Food & Water Watch, joined Bernie Sanders, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Our Revolution and Climate Hawks Vote in endorsing Tom Perriello to be the next governor of Virginia.
“We firmly believe that Perriello will be the strong environmental champion that we need to move Virginia off of its dependency on dirty fuels and towards renewable energy. In a state that has totally catered to the energy industry by only enacting voluntary goals for a transition to renewables, Perriello’s bold stance against two fracked natural gas pipelines, the Atlantic Coast Pipeline and the Mountain Valley Pipeline, shows he will be ready to stand up against the oil and gas industry’s stranglehold on the state.”
“Many cities in Virginia are already feeling the dramatic effects of global warming and the labyrinth of pipelines the oil and gas industry intends to build out in the coming decade will only heighten our country’s self-sabotaging addiction to dirty energy. Periello’s unapologetic refusal to accept campaign handouts from utility giants like Dominion Virginia Power will protect Virginia from big energy initiatives that threaten the future of our environment, communities and our country. Virginia needs a governor who will say ‘No’ to fracking in the Tidewater and George Washington National Forest to protect essential water resources and Perriello has served notice that he intends to lead Virginia in a different direction.”
“At a time when forging a safe and healthy future becomes more tenuous with each new policy the regressive Trump administration supports, principled candidates like Tom are the leaders we need to push a more progressive agenda forward. Because his priorities include scaling minimum wage to $15 per hour and investing in key state infrastructure projects, we have no doubt that Tom will honor and uphold a more progressive vision for Virginia.”
