This November will be a pivotal election. Since his election, Trump and his cronies have unleashed an unprecedented and relentlessly destructive agenda that is having and will continue to have lasting impacts on our food, water, communities and climate. Congress has been an active and willing partner in advancing Trump’s deregulatory agenda. We need to put the break’s on Trump’s dangerous plan as soon as possible and we have a chance to to just that in November’s elections.
The Congress We Want
We must elect a new congress who will do more than say they will resist Trump. If we are to really make the changes needed to protect our food, water and the climate on which we all depend, we must elect champions who will put forward a progressive and far-reaching environmental agenda. Rep Keith Ellison has introduced the WATER Act to protect communities like Flint, but he needs more members standing with him to pass this important legislation. Rep Tulsi Gabbard has introduced the Off Fossil Fuels Act - the strongest climate legislation ever introduced - but she needs more partners in advocating for this landmark legislation.
Our First Endorsements
This year, Food & Water Action is endorsing a slate of progressive food, water and climate champions. We will be mobilizing our members and supporters to turn out votes for these candidates so that they can bring their strong positions to Congress in 2019. All of these candidates have committed to these policy positions that are critical to Food & Water Action’s mission:
Support the WATER Act and ensure safe, public water for all
Support the Off Fossil Fuels Act and move to 100% renewable energy by 2035
Oppose factory farms and corporate control of our food system
Expand and defend voting rights to make our democracy work for everyone
Work to overturn Citizens United to limit the role of money in politics
No Half Measures
We need more strong members in Congress standing shoulder to shoulder with the growing grassroots movement across the country that is fighting for real changes--ones that rise to meet the greatest environmental challenges of our time. We do not have time for half measures and false solutions. We did not ban fracking in New York or Maryland by fighting for half measures. We did not stop water privatizations across the country by settling for some corporate control. We did not stop the use of arsenic in chicken feed by advocating for smaller amounts. We did it by putting out a bold vision that rises to the problem and organizing to make it happen.
Food & Water Action endorsed candidates are up against big monied opponents, but together, we can help them win so that they can fight for our vision of clean water, safe food and a healthy climate for everyone.
