Today’s dystopian political scene won’t be our future.
This year, we’ve seen millions of people stand up for what’s right – people who never saw themselves as “political” or as activists. We have a detailed plan to harness that power to bring common sense and science back in office.
36 governorships will be decided in the 2018 elections, including in several critical states that can and should be on the leading edge of ushering in the clean energy revolution – states where Food & Water Watch has been building and winning campaigns against fracking, pipelines and water privatization for years. Help us turn this political power into electoral victories.
Governors have a huge amount of influence, signing or vetoing state legislation that impacts millions. When corporations like Exxon, Chevron, and Koch Industries control our governors, we suffer terrible consequences. Let's show corporations that we WON'T let them buy politicians anymore.
If ANY of our governors' top priorities don’t include safe drinking water for all, protection from toxic chemicals and a livable future, then they shouldn’t be in office. That’s why we’re launching a state-by-state strategy to defeat right-wing governors, elect pro-clean energy governors, and make fracking a key political issue in many gubernatorial races this year. Will you chip in $20 to help us build these powerful political campaigns?
Here’s the breakdown of what we’re planning for some key states:
Florida: Climate-denying corporate shill Rick Scott’s term is up. He’s the one who banned employees from using the words “climate change.” In Florida, we’re leading a strong grassroots movement to ban fracking with over 80% of Floridians living in a county that supports a ban. With your help, we can elect a governor that will finally ban fracking.
California: Governor Jerry Brown’s term is up and his record supporting the oil industry in California has been well documented. This year there will be a contested primary race. With your help, we can work to pressure all the leading candidates to support a ban on fracking and protect communities across California.
New York: Governor Cuomo is up for reelection. Last time he ran, the grassroots movement we helped organize in the state pressured him to ban fracking. He’s since blocked several fracking infrastructure projects. But we need him to do more. We can use this election window to extract key commitments on moving off all of fossil fuels and onto 100% renewable energy.
Maryland: This year, Food & Water Watch/Action successfully pressured the legislature to pass and Governor Hogan to sign a fracking ban. Now we’re leading a campaign to move Maryland off of fossil fuels entirely and onto 100% renewable energy by 2035. We need a governor who will not only back this legislation but actively campaign for it. With your support, we’ll make it happen.
Illinois: Governor Rauner is a billionaire ideologue who has been working feverishly to privatize the state and bring fracking to Illinois. In fact, Rauner’s environmental department just approved the first fracking permit in the state, and he’s moving to privatize Illinois’s water. We have a chance to elect a progressive Democrat who will ban fracking and invest in our public resources.
Colorado: Governor Hickenlooper is termed out and there will be an open race for his replacement. In the last four years, we worked with communities to pass fracking bans and moratoriums, but the pro-fracking Hickenlooper and his allies overturned them. We will work to elect a governor committed to moving us off of fossil fuels.
This is the path to real progress.
We have an opportunity to make real progress at the state level — and focusing on local elections can, in turn, effect change at the national level. Take the issue of redistricting, for example: one big reason right-wing Republicans control Congress is that Republican governors working with Republican-controlled legislatures have gerrymandered districts so that the system is rigged against fair representation. We can change that.
We all want and need a progressive Congress to pass national federal priorities like an equitable farm bill, investment in public water infrastructure, a ban on fracking and a move to 100% renewable energy. To do this, we need progressive governors and state legislatures.
With this strategy, we can win.
We will work on top-tier gubernatorial races in states where we have a significant presence and political power to elect progressive Democrats. In doing so, we will move crucial issues forward while preparing for bigger fights at the federal level in 2021 and beyond!
Our community is poised to tip the scales back to good and reclaim the power to control the decisions that impact our lives -- but the only way we’ll win is with your support.
